Châlus is close to our Estate.  Chalus castle is where the English king, Richard the Lionheart, is reputed to have died following his injury on the battlefield in 1199.  You can follow the famous route of Richard the Lionheart which plots his journey along his army’s lines of defence.  This route takes you to many castles, interesting villages and places of interest.

You can test your luck by panning for gold in the river below the castle in Jumilhac-le-Grand (visit the gold museum). The castle of Jumilhac-le-Grand is well worth a visit and in summer you can take a guided tour with an English speaking guide, available daily.

The adjacent department of the Haute Vienne, also offers a lot of possibilities for other excursions. The modern city of Limoges is famous for its beautiful porcelain, has modern commercial centres, and also has a cultural centre mainly based around its theatres and older city centre where you can wander around  its cobbled streets and museums.  Those of you who love porcelain, can visit the Porcelain museum or factories, and perhaps take the opportunity to buy a beautiful piece of porcelain in one of the main Porcelain Houses of the city centre.

If you want to enjoy the thrill of go-cart racing, there is a go carting track situated very close to our Estate.  You will be able to hire go-carts according to age and ability.

Picturesque Périgueux is the main town of the department of the Dordogne. In addition to a beautiful medieval part of the town, you will find remains of this Gallo/Roman centre. You can visit the various museums or browse around the large market which is held weekly. In this area, you will find a full calendar of events including festivals, fetes, markets, concerts, sales of items from loft-clearances and sales of antiques. In Brantome, with its famous Abbey, you can attend its Classical Music Festival or go to it’s Folk Fair including traditionally dressed folk dancers on stilts. Also, the mime festival in Périgueux is a very colourful and interesting event to see. Brantôme has an illustrious abbey, rich in history with remarkable caves and a beautiful river which encircles the town. It is known as the Venice of the Dordogne and indeed in summer you can attend its own masked, costume fete when people in costume go around the town mixing with the visitors and locals. There are water joisting competitions which can be entertaining to watch. Perhaps as entertaining for the family, you could hire canoes and paddle your way around the town at your leisure.
